BMI view: Cairn India has just announced that it is interested in expanding into East Africa. Cairn India 's interest reflects what we see as a nascent trend at the level of the industry, whereby East Africa could be a new 'hot spot' for the oil and gas industry. At the same time, we view Cairn India 's interest in East Africa as being embedded in a greater macroeconomic trend, whereby India is playing catch up to China in the scramble for African resources.
