The launch of China's first shale acreage licensing round is an important milestone in the country's efforts to replicate the shale gas boom that has transformed the US energy market. All indications point to extensive shale gas resource potential in China, but in our view gas price reforms and more foreign cooperation agreements will be needed before the shale revolution comes to China.
