Moscow Advances European Midstream Strategy With German-Czech Oil Interconnector
February 2012 | Industry NewsBMI View: A proposed oil Germany-Czech Republic interconnector that would bypass the Ukrainian section of the Druzhba pipeline highlights Russia's ambition to regain control of European energy export routes. Russia has operated to a template that has thus far proved particularly successful: bypass transit countries to weaken their bargaining position; lure them in with cheaper energy supplies, and then persuade them of the mutual benefit of a merger between their midstream operators and Russia's own companies.
