Venezuela Offers Diesel Lifeline But Downstream Crisis Remains A Threat To The Regime
February 2012 | Industry NewsBMI View: Reports of a diesel cargo being delivered to Syria from Venezuela should offer relief to the Assad regime, but will do little to bring a final end to the country's fuel crisis. Given the increasing risk that capacity could be cut due to sabotage, fuel shortages are likely to continue to force the government to rely on costly imports supplied by a shrinking pool of political allies. However, such a policy is unsustainable in the long term, meaning there is even greater reason to find a solution to the crisis that would be acceptable to all parties.
