No Resolution To Dispute In Sight

BMI View: Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki is requesting that the Obama Administration intervene in the ongoing dispute between the Iraqi federal government and the semi-autonomous region of Kurdistan and oil major ExxonMobil, which he says could result in "wars." At the heart of the conflict is a fundamental disagreement between Baghdad and Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG), over federal and regional authorities, the role and rights of foreign oil companies, and an equitable oil and gas revenue sharing agreement. Due to the degrading Iraqi political environment, BMI does not foresee a resolution to these major including the passing of a much-needed oil revenue sharing law, in 2012.
