Hormuz Chokepoint Still Vital Despite New Pipeline

BMI View: The Strait of Hormuz remains a critical strategic chokepoint for global energy supplies, despite recent infrastructure built to bypass it. Indeed, the United Arab Emirates' new oil pipeline, which carries oil from Abu Dhabi directly to the Gulf of Oman for export, does provide increased flexibility should the Strait become obstructed. Despite this and other export alternatives, the UAE, other regional oil exporters, and global energy importers will remain heavily dependent on security in the Strait.
