Shell Refuses to Pay Up, Blames Siphoning for Delta Spills
May 2006 | Legal NewsOil major Royal Dutch Shell remains defiant in the face of a Nigerian court deadline demanding it pay US$1.5bn in compensation by today to local communities in the oil-producing state of Baleysa, with company officials saying Shell would not pay pending its appeal of the decision. On Friday, the Federal High Court in the Nigerian oil town of Port Harcourt ordered Shell to deposit the money into an account with the Central Bank of Nigeria by noon on Monday.
