Island Crisis Defuses as Japan and South Korea Sit Down to Talk
April 2006 | Project NewsJapan and South Korea have finally agreed to begin negotiating a resolution to their territorial dispute over a potentially resource rich chain of tiny islands, with the two sides are supposed to meet up in May to iron out the final details over their maritime boundaries. Tensions over the area recently climbed to new heights when Japan said it will begin surveying the area, prompting South Korea to send close to two dozen gunboats and threatening military action. The area - known as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan - is located half-way between the two Asian countries
