Having Restored Oil Self-Sufficiency, Brazil Turns Towards Gas

Fresh from its highly publicised announcement of oil self-sufficiency earlier this year, Brazil is looking to break free from external hydrocarbons dependency by satisfying the country's growing domestic gas demand through indigenous production. President Lula da Silva indicated that by 2008 Brazil will be producing as much gas domestically as is imported from Bolivia, while Petrobras President Jose Sergio Gabrielli said the national energy firm is set to ramp up natural gas output towards the end of this decade.
