Need For Compromise On Both Sides
July 2006 | Industry NewsSenior figures in the European Union are calling for a comprehensive and legally binding energy agreement with Russia, hoping to allay growing fears over security of supply from the Eurasian giant. European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, already noted in Moscow as a advocate of energy market liberalisation, wants a wide-ranging agreement between Europe and Russia, one that will clarify each country's position on a number of issues including energy, terrorism and illegal migration. As energy is politically the most divisive of these topics, and the most controversial considering recent events, it will take centre stage in future negotiations.
