Russia Continues Kazakh Charm Drive
July 2006 | Contract NewsAlthough Russia's energy security theme for this year's G8 summit has been somewhat overshadowed by events in the Middle East, the government is continuing to negotiate energy supply accords with its neighbours. President Vladimir Putin recently announced a deal with the Kazakhstan government over development and refinery work on the Karachaganak gas field, one of the main drivers behind the Central Asian state's output growth potential. Although details are sparse, the deal represents a move forward for the Kremlin in its struggle to maintain its influential position within the region.
