Proposed Single Iberian Gas Market
September 2006 | Industry NewsA unification of the Portuguese and Spanish natural gas markets, based on a similar model to the Mercado Ibérico de Electricidade (Mibel) single electricity market, will benefit both consumers and governments. A combination of each country's infrastructure will create greater competition among gas suppliers, providing consumers with greater choice and therefore keeping a downward pressure on prices. Both countries have existing gas import agreements and so one will not be overly reliant on the other, while both have a pre-existing infrastructure to connect suppliers and customers from both sides of the border.
