Bad News For Japan : Sakhalin-I Gas May All Go To China

Japan may lose out to China in the competition to secure natural gas exports from the Sakhalin-I development in Russia's Far East, according to a report in the Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai Shimbun. The report follows the signing of a preliminary deal between US major ExxonMobil, which heads the consortium developing the project, to sell all of the natural gas exports from Sakhalin-I to the state-controlled China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC). The deal will accelerate negotiations and is expected to result in the signing of an official sales and purchase agreement in the near future. This is bad news for
