EU Issues New Energy Efficiency Proposals
October 2006 | Market StrategyEnergy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs issued a slew of new proposals on October 19 to cut EU energy consumption by 20% by 2020, equivalent to EUR100bn of annual savings. The report, which is to be presented to EU energy ministers in November, had been held up by divisions over broader energy policy, and internal wrangling between the energy commission and EU President Jose Manuel Barroso, who had reportedly criticised an earlier draft for lack of precision.
