Qatar Taps Into Growing Asian Market By Boosting LNG Sales To Japan

Qatar is seeking to take advantage of growing Asian demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) by increasing its market share in Japan. Qatar Liquefied Gas Company (Qatargas), a unit of state-controlled Qatar Petroleum, is offering spot cargoes of LNG to Chubu Electric Power Company and other Japanese utilities in order to exploit rising levels of LNG demand in the Asian country. BMI forecasts that Qatar's gas production will rise to around 85bcm by 2010, of which up to 62bcm will be for export, largely as LNG.
