Where Now For Turkmen Gas?
December 2006 | Industry NewsThe balance in the Central Asian energy equation has fundamentally shifted with the sudden death of Turkmenistan's president-for-life Saparmurat Niyazov. Turkmenistan, holder of 2.9trn cubic metres (tcm) of natural gas reserves at end-2005, and one of the world's premier gas producers, plays a vital role in supplying gas to Russia. Until now the country's oil and gas industry has been under the sole authority of the pro-Russian Niyazov, known as Turkmenbashi, and his demise signals big changes ahead for Central Asian energy, with likely knock-on effects in Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe.
