January 2007 | Industry NewsThe disruption of Russian oil supplies to the European Union (EU) via Belarus has brought into sharp relief the necessity of reducing European dependence on Russian hydrocarbons and the importance of energy security in EU policy. Currently the EU relies on Russia for around 25% of its oil and gas supplies, a figure which is set to rise to around 70% by 2030 unless concerted action is taken to diversify supply sources and balance the energy mix. The EU's new energy policy is due to be published tomorrow (10 January) and will call for a 20% cut in EU energy
