Gazprom Steps Into GdF-Suez Merger
July 2007 | Company News AlertRussian news agency ITAR TASS has reported that negotiations concerning French major Total's participation in the development of the Shtokman gas field in the Barents Sea included discussion of Russian state-controlled energy giant Gazprom's involvement in the merger of Gaz de France (GdF) and Suez. If true, the news would confirm the role played by newly-installed French President Nicolas Sarkozy in talks, and would suggest future energy cooperation between France and Russia at a time when the European Commission (EC) is attempting to build support for a unified energy policy.
