Argentina Lodges Formal Claim Over Falklands Acreage
April 2009 | Industry NewsArgentina has lodged a formal legal claim with the UN for control over large stretches of the South Atlantic seabed, which includes the UK-administered Falkland Islands. The discovery of potential oil plays south of the Falklands in the 1990s has boosted interest in exploration in the area that could rekindle long-standing territorial conflict between the two countries. Britain has until May 13 to present its own claims over the territory to the UN.
