Senate Rejects Carbon Emissions Trading Scheme

The Australian government's ambitious carbon emissions trading scheme (CETS) was struck down by the Senate, the upper house of parliament, on August 12. The government's plan sets out a target to reduce carbon emissions by between 5% and 25% of 2000 levels by 2020 and would compel Australia's 1,000 largest emitters of carbon dioxide (accounting for 75% of national emissions) to buy carbon permits.
