Senate Rejects Carbon Emissions Trading Scheme
August 2009 | Industry NewsThe Australian government's ambitious carbon emissions trading scheme (CETS) was struck down by the Senate, the upper house of parliament, on August 12. The government's plan sets out a target to reduce carbon emissions by between 5% and 25% of 2000 levels by 2020 and would compel Australia's 1,000 largest emitters of carbon dioxide (accounting for 75% of national emissions) to buy carbon permits.
