MEND To Resume Attacks On September 15

A spokesperson for the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) has denounced the Nigerian government's amnesty programme and has declared that the group will resume 'ferocious' attacks on oil infrastructure on September 15. Having announced a 60-day ceasefire in July to provide time for negotiations with the government, MEND has now suspended talks with the Special Adviser to the president on the amnesty and with regional governors, claiming that the disarmament programme is no more than a 'charade' unless the underlying causes of regional unrest are addressed.
