House Committee Launches Fraccing Investigation
February 2010 | Industry NewsThe US House Energy and Commerce Committee has launched an investigation into the impact of hydraulic fracturing (fraccing) techniques on the environment and public health. The scope and purpose of the investigation are set out in a memorandum to members of the subcommittee on energy and environment published on February 18 by Chairman Henry A. Waxman and Subcommittee Chairman Edward J. Markey. The investigation has been prompted by growing concern among lawmakers and the public over the environmental effects of the massive rise in the use of fraccing technology to support booming unconventional gas production in the US.
