In a bid to strengthen its security of supply, Japan's second-largest utility company, Kansai Electric Power Company, has agreed to increase shipments of liquefied natural gas (LNG) from Australia's giant North West Shelf Venture. The new deal provides for Kansai Electric to buy around 400,000 tonnes per annum (tpa) of LNG for eight years starting in April 2009, which will boost the volume of LNG Kansai receives from the North West Shelf to around 1mn tpa from 2009. As Indonesia, Japan's primary supplier, continues to suffer from declining gas production from its fields and persists in failing to fulfil supply
