Following Kuwait's discovery in March of 991bn cubic metres (bcm) of free natural gas and 10-13bn barrels of light crude in what it called its 'northern oil fields', the state plans to start commercial production of gas in late 2007 or early 2008, according to Farouk al-Zanki, head of state-controlled Kuwait Oil Company (KOC). Al-Zanki said the firm expects an initial output of 1.8bcm, which it would increase to 6.2bcm by 2011 and to 28.3bcm by 2014-15, and added that KOC would have an outline plan for natural gas development by the end of 2006.
