The Canadian government has formally offered financial backing to the Mackenzie gas pipeline project, according to a statement by environment minister Jim Prentice. The offer comes after more than a year of silence from the federal government following the submission of a proposal by the pipeline's developers in December 2007. Although few details of the government's long-awaited offer have been revealed, according to Prentice it involves contributing to infrastructure and pre-construction costs, which could cover the building of airstrips and barge landings, and 'sharing risks and returns'.
